Goa!
Now that’s a word that is guaranteed to grab the attention
of any individual in our country, irrespective of age. Goa is known not only as
a great vacation spot with family and for hanging out with friends but also for
Goan cuisine which includes unique and different food preparations. (And also
for their beaches and cheap alcohol!)
There are other noteworthy facts about Goa but since we will
concentrate on Goan food specifically, let’s keep it to that. We have recently
been to the Goan Food Festival Preview at the JW Marriott Hotel, Bangalore and
we got a taste of what Goan home cooking tastes like.
As it was a preview, not all the dishes were served and the
actual buffet would contain many more preparations. The JW Marriott is trying
to give a twist to the way things are normally done by allowing a renowned home
chef from Goa, Chef Sinnatra to take over the reputed JW Kitchen and give all
their customers a true taste of Goan food.
So, coming down to what we tried:
The prawn curry with lady finger preparation had a tangy
flavour. The prawns were well cooked and retained the flavours. The lady
fingers were fresh and combined with the tanginess, tasted quite remarkable. As
suggested by Chef Sinnatra, this dish is to be consumed with rice, with loads
of gravy and less number of prawns.
The Chicken Xacuti was marvellous. The predominance of
coconut and fresh ground spices made this dish the best of the lot. The chicken
was well cooked and tender. It tasted excellent with the rice.
The Pork Vindaloo preparation was equally good and deserves
praise. The meat was well done and by the flavours in the meat one can predict
the time invested in this marvel. This preparation was spicy and definitely
mouth-watering.
We were also served crispy fried Sardines. It was crispy on
the outside and soft on the inside. The fish bones were brittle and thus,
swallow them away! The fried fish was a perfect side dish with the above
preparations.
Since Goan non veg food has a lot of spice involved, their
vegetarian preparations are mostly steamed, stir fried and boiled. From the veg
side, we were only served steamed pumpkin. It was very light on the stomach and
sort of acted as a palate cleanser. It was mildly sweet and tasted pretty
decent.

Now that’s all we tried from the main course. They have a
few fruity mocktails and cocktails for the Goan menu. We tried a few and they
were certainly refreshing. [The names were a bit complicated and we don’t
remember]
Lastly, we tried one dessert which was in the form of a block.
It was made of grated coconut, raisins and a few nuts mainly. It was mildly
sweet and had a very good aroma. Taste wise, it had all the characteristic
flavours and thumbs up!
Wrapping up from our side, one can indulge in this culinary
experience till the 23rd of this month.
All this and more is priced at INR 1699 + taxes which is
very decent if you consider dining at the JW Kitchen and experiencing Goan home
style food right here In Namma Bengaluru! Not a lot of time left, so if you love Goan food: hurry!
In case you guys visit, do let us know about your experience.
We’ll be back as always with you know what ;)
Till then—stay tuned and bon apetit!
