Fried Chilli Prawns with tamarind sauce @ Hunan | Koramangala | Bangalore
Fried Chilli Prawns with Tamarind sauce

Hunan in Kormangala, 5th Block is one of the oldest and most famous restaurants in Bangalore for Pan Asian food. But it was our first time visiting Hunan on the occasion of the unveiling of their new menu which features some authentic Chinese & Cantonese food. But the star point goes to them, for coming up with an array of dishes which are specifically for people intolerant of gluten.

Yes, Hunan has come up with dishes like Asian style stuffed tofu with chicken, raw mango chili fish, Tofu summer rolls and much more in their Gluten Free menu. We tried some of the gluten free dishes and the dishes from the new menu and we can say that we are pretty happy with the new menu.

This time, I (Priyanjana) will be giving you guys the walk through, so let me take you through the dishes we tried.

The August Moon Festival | Memories of China | Vivanta by Taj-M.G Road | Bangalore

Have you guys ever heard of something called the August Moon Festival?

Whatever your answer is, do read on as we got to know about it recently and celebrated this auspicious event at none other than Memories of China, Vivanta by Taj—M.G Road, Bangalore. This festival is regarded as the second grandest festival in China and is also known as the mid-autumn festival.

It is called the August Moon Festival because at this time of the year the moon is at its brightest and roundest. The festival is associated with family engagement, traditional Chinese food and moon cakes.

They have a special menu for this festival and it kicked off from the 1st of September. The menu has a great balance between Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian items but does not have any desserts. So, if you have a dessert craving then the main menu will come to your rescue.

We tried almost the entire menu, but we will be talking about the highlights only. As the preparations are Authentic Chinese, there are chances that some might not be palate friendly.

Stir fried water chestnut, lotus stem and potatoes in chef special sauce

Steamed eggplant in spicy peanut sauce

cauliflower in a creamy sauce with preserved chilli

We normally try non veg more, but this time we will be talking about veg too!

The Dragon Boat Festival @ Memories of China | Vivanta by Taj | Bangalore

We have been visiting many starred hotels lately for food festivals, launches and of course events. Most of them have amazing grandeur and their decor is a level above. But very few of them actually serve good food! Most of the times their grandeur, decor and service fetches them good ratings but in reality they do not deserve it food and taste wise!

On the same page, we recently visited Memories of China @ Vivanta by Taj located in M.G Road, Bangalore for trying out their special Dragon Boat Festival Menu. We visited this restaurant for the first time and we believe it should be judged only after having a complete meal.

From the outside, it might not seem impressive but if a step is taken forward, the vision changes. It has authentic Chinese decor and it also serves authentic Chinese cuisine! An attractive feature is the presence of rotating tables.

Now coming to the special menu, it is a complete menu with a huge variety of items so we could not try everything. This menu has been created or better to say crafted by their Chinese master chef Lai Hin Tong William who has over 43 years of culinary experience. We had the pleasure of meeting him as well and he was a charming personality.

The Dragon Boat Festival @ Yauatcha | Bangalore

By now you would have known that Yauatacha is one of our most favourite places to visit! This time we had the privilege of tasting the festival menu, of the Dragon Boat festival.
Dragon Boat festival is traditionally a time to eat Zongzi, drink rice wine and race dragon boats and indulge in celebrations with family and friends. This festival dates back 2000 year!

The zongzi , pyramid shaped sticky rice dumplings, being the speciality of this festival made up 90 percent of the menu. This festival menu is a side menu and not complete by itself.

All of the sticky rice dumplings are steamed with lotus leaf wrapped around the pyramid/ squares of rice. The lotus leaf lends a beautiful aroma and subtle taste to the dumplings.

Wok'n Tava | Review | Bangalore

We have tried out several food delivery services in the past and each of them had their unique visions which was manifested in the food they deliver.

Recently we tried out Wok n Tava and we must say that most of their food is very impressive. Not only their food, but their packaging is very efficient in terms of spillage.

Their packing ensures zero spillage and the food stays warm for quite a long time.
We tried out a variety of their items and especially their Chinese and Indian food items are quite impressive.

So, let’s start with the starters of course ;)

Chinese New Year Menu at Yauatcha | Bangalore | Year of the Monkey

So, our food blogging journey began almost a year ago and since then we have come a really long way.

We have visited street food joints, cafes, fine dining restaurants, barbeque joints and of course in general buffet joints. (And more as well ;))

So, now we mark a checkpoint in our food blogging journey with our first Michelin star restaurant visit. It is a renowned name the world over for the Chinese and pan Asian cuisine they serve, but they are even better known for their beautifully crafted desserts. They provide what we would call a supreme dining experience which is luxurious and is guaranteed to wake up your taste buds!

So, the name of the restaurant (You must have guessed it by now) is Yauatcha , which is located at 1 MG road Mall, Bangalore.

Beijing Bites Review, Electronic City outlet

Chinese and Thai cuisines that are available in India are somewhat different and Indian-ised versions of the original dishes. And that somehow seems to works very well for us, because from what I have noticed I can say that Chinese “Fast Food” is the second most popular fast food or meal, obviously after our respective regional favourites ! (It might be different in your case :P)

Last week, we went to the nearest Beijing Bites from where we stay, in Electronic city. This outlet is a fully fledged restaurant, not the usual tiny outlet in a food court of a mall.
But I have to say this beforehand that I did not like the ambiance much, it was okay.
Décor was basic and something I would not be very happy to see , but I can say it was okay.

We went for dinner, around 9 at night and the place was full so we had to wait for around 10 minutes and then we got a place. We had ordered while waiting so we were expecting a quick service. But, the people ordering after us were getting their food before us. Maybe it was our choice of unconventional dishes, but the service time was around 40 minutes.

We ordered Dragon rolls with Garlic sauce for starters. This was served quickly. On the menu you will see that this is spicy, but I did not find it to be spicy at all. The taste was good of the rolls.

The rolls were basically fried dumplings filled with minced chicken. The garlic sauce was very lightly flavoured , almost bland.

Next, came in our main course order –
Khao phad Kapde  , Mixed Nonveg Koithio, Honey hunan Chicken and Fish in oyster sauce. The quantity was sufficient for three people and two of us are large eaters anyway.

I really liked khao phad kapde, this is a Thai rice and is full of flavours. You will like this if you like strongly flavoured rice. Love the fact that this was really moist and full of seafood.

I didn’t know what Koithio was before I ordered and I was very happy to get what I didn’t expect.

I love flat noodles and Koithio is Flat noodles. This tastes okay and has an odd combination of sauces.
Lightly flavoured with lots of vegetable, this is something I would like to eat when I am looking for something light to eat. My only disappointment with this was that this was served to us cold.
I DO NOT like cold food.

Honey Hunan Chicken, sweet and savoury. Loved it! The chicken tasted really good as they were fried strips which soaked the gravy nicely. This is all sauce, no distinct flavour. But it is something you would like if you like light Chinese flavours. As, far as honey is considered , I didn’t get any distinct flavour of honey.

Fish in Oyster Sauce – Light and savoury, not spicy at all. I loved the soft cubes of fish. I have to say they were cooked to perfection.

So, to sum up I can say that apart from the service and ambiance, I like the food and pricing very much. Because, all these summed up to less that 1000 INR , which is pretty reasonable given the quantity. But, that is it.

I would go back there because they had some more interesting things on the menu which I would like to taste and will definitely update you about it.

Till then let’s see how I liked Beijing Bites-
Food- 3.25/5
Ambiance – 2.5/5 (They played only Himesh Reshamiya’s Songs!)
Service – 2.5/5
Cleanliness – 4/5
Value for money – 3.75/5
