The New Menu @ Hunan | Koramangala | Bangalore
11:51Fried Chilli Prawns with Tamarind sauce |
Hunan in Kormangala, 5th Block
is one of the oldest and most famous restaurants in Bangalore for Pan Asian
food. But it was our first time visiting Hunan on the occasion of the unveiling
of their new menu which features some authentic Chinese & Cantonese food. But
the star point goes to them, for coming up with an array of dishes which are
specifically for people intolerant of gluten.
Yes, Hunan has come up with dishes like
Asian style stuffed tofu with chicken, raw mango chili fish, Tofu summer rolls
and much more in their Gluten Free menu. We tried some of the gluten free
dishes and the dishes from the new menu and we can say that we are pretty happy
with the new menu.
This time, I (Priyanjana) will be giving you guys the walk through, so let me take you through the dishes we tried.

Sweet and sour tofu soup with crab meat |
Thai seafood and rice vermicelli salad |
Truffle scented edamame dumplings |
Crunchy wonton ribbon prawns |
Vegetable cocktail rolls |
The Sweet and sour tofu soup with crab-meat was
what we started our dinner with. A delicately balanced sweet and sour soup with
mild flavors of crab and small cubes of tofu. But, I think that it could have
been just a tad bit sweeter.
The Thai seafood with rice vermicelli salad was
honestly one of the best salads I have had in a long time. The sharp spice
cutting through the mild seafood flavors and sourness was perfectly
complimented with the rice vermicelli and poached prawns.
The Asian flavor chicken salad is something I
didn’t like much, but if you think of authentic Chinese flavor, this would be
the correct definition. Slightly bland for us Indians, but the slightly sweet
and crunchy salad was loved by many.
Truffle scented edamame dumpling stands
true to its name. The flavor of truffle is very faint though. This dumpling is
served on a bed of soy sauce and the filling has a few chunks of
edamame. It was quite refreshing as compared to finely pasted edamame.
The Crunchy wonton ribbon prawns were one
of the best dishes of the night. Flavorful with that crunchy element and the
lovely flavors of the sauce. Vegetable cocktail rolls were nicely done crisp
rolls, which had a flavorful filling. A delight for the vegetarians. The Salt
and pepper silken tofu is another thing the vegetarians would love. Soft, silky
tofu tossed in pepper and salt tasted very well indeed.

Salt and pepper silken tofu |
Chicken fatty bao |
Asian style stuffed tofu with chicken, a
dish from the gluten free menu looked interesting and tasted pretty good. The only thing is that the chicken
was a little stiff compared to the silky tofu, so the contradiction made it a
little confusing to the palette. It would be better with soft chicken filling.
Taste wise it was really quite good.
The Chicken fatty bao was a soft bao and had a
nice crunch because of the veggies. Some micro greens lent a freshness which
added to the experience.
Now the Sugarcane skewered chicken was one
item I think needs a bit of improvement. The chicken was properly done on the
outside with the smoky flavor but the inner layer, the layer on the skewer was
a little chalky with the seasoning.
The Guandong chicken was an interesting dish
with lots of textures lent by the water chestnut, peanut and mushroom along with
the chicken in a mild brown sauce. The Raw Mango chilli fish was an interesting
dish with the mild spicy flavor and the fresh tanginess of the raw mango. I
would have loved if the flavor of the raw mango was more prominent.
The Vegan Ham Fried Rice with Pickled Leafy was
wonderfully flavoured fried rice with soya bean chunks. Perfect accompaniment
for the Guandong chicken. Another Praise worthy dish was the chicken stew with
the black wood ear mushroom, this is served with sticky rice and is a lovely
dish to have.

Guandong Chicken |
Chicken Thai curry |
Meringue nest with lemon curd |
Red velvet pastry |
The desserts were really very good. The Red
velvet cake was nice and soft and had the perfect texture. The meringue nest
with lemon curd was perfect to end the feast. Refreshing and very light, this
dessert was the best out of the two.
So, that's all from our side. It is good to know that a restaurant has a dedicated Gluten free menu in Bangalore now.
Do let us know your thoughts on the same!
