Grilled Tenderloin on the rocks


It is a known fact that alcohol goes well with meat, be it white or red. Plenty of people prefer their drinks in a certain way & we recently enjoyed our meat in that way. Surprised?

We were too! Now, confirming our lines of thought: we tried our meat on the rocks. Stone minced meat & cooking meat on a hot stone is practiced in many parts of the world, but what we tried had a twist. Ever seen a thick fillet of beef cooked on a piece of volcanic rock under 5 minutes? Well, that’s what we are talking about ;)

This post is all about our dining experience at On The Rocks, Crowne Plaza Adyar Park, Chennai. They have an exclusive bar at the ground level & a family dining area at the +1. They focus mainly on their grills & wine pairings & they are of a different league.
Coming down to what we tried:



The 5 meat course on the plate & the tenderloin on the rocks: short & sweet isn’t it?
Each course has a soup/salad accompaniment. We tried the salad & Chicken & Thyme soup. The salad had the right balance between greens & citrus elements. On top of that it had feta, cherry tomatoes & pomegranate seeds/nuts as the crunchy element.
The soup was a clear broth soup with loads of vegetables & chicken. It captured all the natural flavors & it was an absolute treat.

On the rocks:

The volcanic stone is heated to about 200 degree Celsius & because of its properties, it remains hot. First, some rosemary & rock salt is scattered on it & then the thick tenderloin fillet. The meat has to be turned periodically to avoid overcooking certain portions. It has a red wine jus for adding while cooking. We had it medium rare & accompanied with a blue cheese sauce & vegetables it is a complete meal. This was one of the best tenderloin steaks we’ve had till date.

On the plate:

Well, this is a meat eater’s paradise with 5 different types of meat being served one after the other. The red meat is paired with a Shiraz. The 5 being: Chicken, Duck, Lamb, Tenderloin & Tiger Prawns. Except for the lamb which was slightly overdone, all of them were cooked to perfection. The chicken & duck paired well with the BBQ sauce which was served. The duck is a special variant from Thailand & was plain grilled without marination. For the red meats, a different sauce was served & as expected, the pairing was perfect. Lastly, the prawns were huge in size but the best in taste. It was partially caramelized on the outside & it was juicy on the inside. Kudos to the chef. 

We tried a mocktail before the meat came in: It was pineapple based with vanilla ice cream. It was mildly sweet & the consistency was just right.

Lastly, for dessert we tried a couple of items, the names of which we do not remember exactly.

There was a coffee crème brulee with the perfect crack, served with figs & an almond biscuit. It had the right amount of sweetness & balance of flavor. The chocolate delice was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It has a velvety texture outside & a creamy texture inside, but fully chocolate. A must try for chocolate lovers.

It was a really special evening with varied conversations & the dining experience wouldn’t have been the same without it.

The items mentioned above are carefully crafted to perfection & are definitely worth a shot. Don’t complain to us if you get cravings all of a sudden though ;). Do enjoy the visuals & let us know about your experience if you visit.

New offerings from Unibev

There’s nothing more satisfying to a true foodie than a solid meal.
Now, solid does not necessarily mean no fluids ;).
Let’s face it, a bit of alcohol does wonders! [For those who drink of course]
We’ve been laying a bit low for quite some time now but we’ll rise from the ashes
sometimes & share with you our experiences.
This post focuses on a few items we’ve received from Unibev, a premium spirits company.
This post is solely about alcohol so, caution is advised.
Coming down to what we’ve received:
Oakton Barrel Aged premium grain whisky, Governor’s Reserve premium grain
whisky & L’affaire Napoleon premium French grape brandy.
We really liked the brandy as it was very smooth & had characteristic grape flavors. The bottle was also a highlight. Though we didn't quite indulge in this, we really like it and are saving it for the colder months and for the sangria!!



The Governor’s Reserve was disappointing. It was not smooth at all & in fact very coarse.
The only way we could try is by diluting it. It’s mentioned that it has blended scotch,
but it does not feel the same. The blending needs steep improvement.
The Oakton Barrel Aged whiskey was a tad bit smoother than the above.
The blending seemed very similar with the difference in smoothness.
From an observatory point of view, both the whisky’s tasted very similar
to Seagram’s Royal Stag.
Regarding market advantage, there does not seem to be one.
Whisky’s such as Signature and Blender’s Pride have a larger market share & are priced
lower.
So, the Governor’s Reserve gets a thumbs down from us. In fact the whiskies need quite some improvement.
We enjoy drinking a variety of alcohol & we have the experience to provide
accurate comparisons.

Do you believe that simple things can be re-done differently & end up giving you a refreshing splash?

If you’ve read through other posts in our blog, you’ll know that we talk about our responsibility of visiting new places to eat & this is one such instance.

Fusion food is generally something chefs experiment with during “food festivals” but rarely do you find eateries with the courage to focus solely on fusion food.

Unveiling the curtains now: We recently visited a café named Stuffd in Old Airport road, Indiranagar Bangalore which specializes in fusion food.



Stuffd serves a small variety of items at the moment as they’ve recently opened but they’re soon planning to expand their menu. These are the list of items you can gorge on if you visit them: Gol Gappas with fillings, variety of food bowls, Toastizzas & lastly our favorite, the Conpati or chapatti cones with fillings.

For drinks, they serve flavored Lassi & cold beverages ranging from cold coffees to floats.
We visited on a cloudy weekend evening & ended up having a great time! They only have outdoor seating so you can feel the wind in your hair.

So, here’s what we tried:

Alfredo Mac Gol gappas, Cold Coffee, Kiwi Float, Noodle Rasam Bowl, Arrabiata Mac Bowl, Mexican Corn Toastizza & lastly, the Chicken Chapati Cone.

First up, their gol gappas are refreshingly different. They serve the Alfredo Mac filling inside & topped off with a black olive. They serve the sauce separately in a shot glass. So, either you fill it up first or have it separately.

The beverages were both very refreshing. The cold coffee especially was exactly the way it should be: dominant flavor of coffee, chilled & mildly sweet.

The noodle rasam bowl was one of a find. Well done noodles in a bowl of rasam & served with a masala papad. Hard to say, but we actually liked it!

The Arrabiata was lip smacking, but a little bit more tanginess from the tomatoes would’ve done wonders.

The Toastizza was perfect in terms of quantity & there’s not much you can go wrong with. The bread could’ve been crispier for a solid crunch. It had generous amounts of paprika, corn & cheese. All it needed was a bit more crunch & that’d be it!

Lastly, the chicken chapati cone was simply a meaty treat. It had loads of chicken & the balance between sauces & spices was perfect.

Overall, their items are very simple & that’s the trick. We often forget that the simple things can give us the most amount of joy & fool us at the same time.

Stuffd works on a customer centric model & they tweak their menu based on customer preference & feedback. They’re planning on opening other outlets across the city of Bangalore.

Their pricing is reasonable, pocket friendly & definitely VFM.

 We’ll be revisiting them soon & post about our experience to let you guys know about what’s new & happening.

The Sriracha Experience | UB City | Bangalore



Woh!

It’s been quite some time that we’ve written on the blog & we don’t have a good excuse for it. We haven’t announced it yet, but we’re now in Chennai too! Although, we haven’t had the chance to explore Chennai as much as we’ve done with Bangalore but we’re getting there.
 
Recently, we’ve been to Sriracha in UB City, Bangalore & the experience is what this post is about.

They have a pretty elaborate menu, the reason being we tried sample portions of most of the items to try as much as we can. 

We tried Salads, Dim Sum, Baos, Sushi and the general starters & main course. We were completely stuffed towards the end so we couldn’t have dessert! Can you guys believe that? We were a bit out of the game but we’re coming back strong for sure ;).

Regarding the ambiance: We enjoyed the open air seating which was a bit uncomfortable as the more the food you ingest, the hotter you feel. The inside had air conditioning with oriental designs.

Coming down to the food:

The items are priced appropriately & the quantity & quality are at par. Now we’ll list down the items we recommend & the ones we didn’t like so much. Our preference is different so it won’t be fair to list as not recommended. 

Must try: Som Tam Green Papaya Salad, Honey Hunan Roasted Pork Bao, Steamed Prawns Spinach Roll & Aromatic Spicy Chicken Dumplings, Grilled Lemongrass Chilli Fish, Coffee Rubbed Pork Riblets, Pandan Leaf-wrapped Cottage Cheese, Stir-fry Tenderloin in Sesame Hot Garlic.

These are the stars & we definitely recommend them. We tried a couple of cocktails to quench our thirst: Cancun tea (a highly intoxicating mix of alcohol) & 2 alcohol based cocktails: one with Black Dog & the other with JW Black Label.




The Som Tam salad was fresh, citrus-y, sweet & sour & had a good crunch to it. The Pork Bao was a classic. Everything was spot on. The Prawns Spinach roll was remarkable. The simplicity & natural flavors excited us the most. The black bean sauce complemented the rolls. The Aromatic Chicken Dumplings were very different in taste with a hint of lemongrass. The chicken was cooked before steaming & was mildly spicy. The Lemongrass fish was aromatic & juicy. The Riblets were spectacular. Good amount of meat and can be handled single-handedly ;). The tenderloin prep was spicy & full of meaty goodness. The Cottage Cheese prep was mind blowing. It melted in the mouth & the taste was unparalleled. 

We tried 2 Sushi variants: Cucumber & Cream Cheese & Prawn Tempura. Both were decent but we’d suggest tampering with the combination inside the Sushi. The balance was flavors need to be improved. 


We felt a couple of dishes can be made lip smacking: Wild Mushroom Purple Dumplings, Rock Corn, Togarashi Dusted Sriracha Prawns. 

The first has a fascinating color but the taste doesn’t complement the first impression. The Rock Corn needs more effort. We found it to be too plain. The third is a Sriracha signature but we have to be honest: The preparation can be made much, much better! The coating of the prawns need more zing. 













That’s all from our side!

Overall, we had a super Saturday lunch. 

Nowadays, most restaurants tend to overcharge for items but certainly not in this case. The items provide VFM & we’ll definitely try re-visiting. A special mention to their Khow Suey which is mouth-watering, crunchy & aromatic.
