Black Pearl Review | Koramangala | Bangalore
The Black Pearl Entrance

Classic restaurants are always a favorite for every foodie, but just like someone needs a palate cleanse after eating the same kind of food again and again, classic settings need to be put aside and one should go for a themed restaurant. We were dining out at many locations, but even though there was a wow factor in the food the wow factor in the ambiance was missing. We were planning to go to The Black Pearl in Koramangala, Bangalore for quite some time but the plan was being delayed every time, until we got out hands on a groupon and we couldn’t control the urge anymore!

It is located quite near to the Forum mall in Koramangala and the surrounding area has full of establishments and food joints. We made prior appointment for a buffet and we were spell bound at the decor of the restaurant. The pirate theme was so mesmerizing that it captivated us instantly and it felt as if we time traveled back to the pirate age. Model skulls everywhere, pirate figures, ancient scary looking doors, and the entire restaurant set up was that of a pirate ship with the entire crew dressed up as pirates and sailors.

There were big spider webs made of ropes and the tables were held together using chains! Now enough about the decor, the pictures are self explanatory.

There was a BIG buffet spread with exotic meat live counters. We were served two mocktails each—we had a mango shake, a litchi mocktail, a chocolate mocktail and a fresh lime. The mango shake had a very refreshing mango flavour with the right amount of sweetness and was very thick in texture. The litchi mocktail had an enticing blue colour and was served with lemon. This drink was very refreshing as well, but the litchi-lemon tanginess made it the best appetizer. The other two drinks were taken just before the main course.

The starters were kebabs and were very different from what we normally have. The veg starters comprised Lebanese mushrooms, hare paneer tikka, honey cinnamon pineapple, crispy corn and the best for last, Jamaican crispy fried potato.

The Lebanese mushrooms were just wow! Tender, smoky flavour and that typical mushroom aroma combined to give an absolute delight! The hare paneer tikka is something you will get in any other buffet spread—nothing so special. The crispy corn was very juicy, and it had a sweet taste keeping the taste of the corn intact as well. The best thing about the corn is that, they did not stick to our teeth :P!

Now coming to the best dishes—The Jamaican potato preparation had a perfect balance of the crispiness of the potato and a sweet curd flavour. It was finger licking good! The pineapple was a standout as it was true to its naming. The honey made the pineapple a little sticky but the juiciness was intact. The cinnamon seasoning gave it a great aroma and it was absolute yummy!

After the veg starters we moved to the live counters, here we tasted quail, rabbit and mixed sea food—prawns, octopus and squid.

This was the first time and we were quite nervous whether we would throw up or not! :P

The quail and the rabbit were quite fibrous. Both of them were dry dishes and were too bony. But the quail was less fibrous, a bit chewy but soft overall. It was a different experience and was quite tasty truthfully speaking. The rabbit meat was stiff, had a shredded texture and had a unique taste.
As for the mixed sea food platter, it had a balance of flavours—the sweetness of the prawns, the chewiness of the squid and the aroma. The octopus was quite soft and did not have the fishy smell like the squid. Overall it was a thrilling experience!

After this we had the non veg kebab starters which comprised goan coastal prawns, chicken chutneywala, peshawari fish, mutton sesame sheekhs and tangdi kebabs (chicken legs).

Non veg kebabs

The prawn kebabs were extraordinary, sweet, grilled and the goan spices and coconut aroma made it a wonder. The chicken kebab was soft, had a different taste of spiced chutney but was not that good. The peshawari fish was golden in colour, perfectly fried and was juicy and tender. It was lightly spices and perfect in balance. The mutton sheekh kebabs were exceptionally soft and the sesame seeds gave a good aroma and flavour. We had never experienced mutton kebabs so juicy before! The tengdi kebabs had a smoky flavour and were quite spicy. It was good, but nothing exceptional!

Before the main course we had the other two mocktails—the chocolate mocktail and the fresh lime soda. The chocolate drink had the usual great taste of rich chocolate. It had grated chocolate, chocolate sauce and chocolate ice cream! The best trio a chocolate lover would want. The fresh lime soda had a sweet and sour taste and it was very refreshing indeed! After each sip there was a big burp and the feeling was splendid! :P

The main course was not very impressive. We were mostly full by then and did not take much. We tasted some chicken biriyani, spinach corn pasta, some fish (don’t remember the recipe) and the mutton preparation. The fish and the mutton were properly cooked and soft. The mutton was very tasty, well spiced and it was hot! The fish preparation had a schezwan touch and the gravy was consistent and tasty. The biriyani was normal but the pasta was not quite good. The aroma did not feel right and it made us feel uneasy.

The dessert spread was varied and had many items you won’t find anywhere else. There were hot gulab jamuns, pirate’s chocolates, pirate’s money bag, vanilla and bubble gum flavoured ice cream, rabdi with malpua, fresh cut fruits, chocolate ganache balls, chocolate pastries and kheer.

Dessert spread

The hot gulab jamuns were soft and evenly coloured. Except for that they were quite normal. The pirate’s chocolates were biscuits in disc shape covered in white and dark chocolate. They were very crunchy but very heavy. The pirate’s money bag was a novel dessert item. It had caramel all over and a ball in the middle which was full of coconut. The taste was bizarre but very good. There was nothing special about the vanilla ice cream but the bubble gum ice cream was quite fun to have. It was like swallowing a liquid boomer mix! :P

The rabdi was very consistent, not too sweet and the malpua along with it had the right amount of crispness. A good dish served in small clay pots. The fruits acted as hydrants and were fresh. The chocolate ganache balls were not too sweet and had a rich chocolate flavour. The only problem was that it was sticky, but that’s the beauty! The kheer was standard and nothing special to mention, but the pastries were soo soft! Bite sized pieces, topped with chocolate rings they were something. Fresh cream, in the right amounts and the flavour of the chocolate was just bang on!

After this, it was very difficult to move to be honest—an excellent experience overall.

Now it’s time to score:

Quantity: - Buffet! ;)
Service: - 3.5/5
Ambiance: - 5/5 (They are true to the theme!)
Variety: - 4/5

Hope you enjoy this review! Till next time—bon appétit!
